A tax app for employees: work expenses, tax withheld and your refund

2Fin is a tax app for employees: it flags expenses that look work-related, keeps the receipt with each one, and estimates your refund in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and India — and in the United States for one kind of income at a time.

What Fin does for you

Work expenses flagged the day they clear

An employee’s claims are usually small and specific — a uniform, a union fee, the work share of a phone — and easy to forget by the time the return is due. Every transaction, and every line of a split payment, is tagged work-related, business or personal. A course fee or a union fee is marked when it lands rather than hunted for at tax time, with the receipt attached. You decide what to claim.

Your refund, estimated as the year goes

In Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and India, Fin projects the tax on your pay to the end of the year, takes off the tax already withheld, and shows the refund or amount owing. In Australia and Canada your work-related deductions come off too; India applies its standard deduction instead, and the UK estimate does not deduct employment expenses yet. In the United States it runs on one kind of income at a time. Elsewhere you see income to date and an effective rate. The live view is on ELITE+ (US$42/month); the accountant pack on Premium carries the same estimate.

Pay that never shows in your bank feed

Add an employer by hand: copy gross pay and tax withheld from your latest payslip, for one pay or year to date, and the estimate uses it. Turn on Track pay days and they appear on your Upcoming list. Free on every plan.

Exports your accountant or tax agent can open

A Tax Deduction CSV labelled for your authority — the ATO in Australia (in its myDeductions layout), HMRC, the IRS, the CRA, India’s Income Tax Department, Inland Revenue NZ or IRAS — plus an accountant ledger everywhere, each row with its receipt reference. On Premium (US$23/month) and up.

Working from home, with the local rules in view

Add your home as a property with the share you work from. In Australia Fin shows the fixed rate beside actual costs and uses the one you choose; in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and India it asks the questions that decide your claim and shows the official guidance, with flat rates stated rather than applied. It takes a yearly hours total, so keep your own record of the hours as you go.

A car logbook that knows job from business

Trips with odometer readings, tagged employee or business, with the work share applied to running costs. In Australia you can use cents per kilometre up to the 5,000 km cap instead, and trips you tag employee go into the myDeductions export.

In Australia

Australia is where 2Fin’s employee support runs deepest. The four below exist nowhere else in the app yet, so they are not promised above.

The myTax line, suggested for each expense

In the ATO myDeductions export and the accountant ledger, each work expense carries a suggested return line — D1 car, D3 clothing and laundry, D4 self-education, D5 other work-related and so on. Premium and up.

Medicare levy, LITO and HELP in the estimate

The refund estimate projects PAYG withholding to 30 June and adds the Medicare levy, the low income tax offset and your HELP repayment, across your salary, any sole-trader profit and net rental income.

The fixed rate for working from home

Enter the hours you worked from home in the year and your running costs, and Fin shows the ATO fixed rate beside actual costs, then uses the one you choose. The guide to the two methods is in Learn.

Cents per kilometre, capped

Car trips tagged employee can use the cents-per-kilometre rate up to the 5,000 km cap, or the logbook share, and the employee trips go into the myDeductions export.

What you can claim

Plain-English guides to the deductions that come up most for work like yours — what usually counts, what usually does not, and the records worth keeping.

Nurses & midwives

As a nurse or midwife you can generally claim your uniforms and laundry, professional registration and memberships, and work-related self-education.

Teachers

As a teacher you can generally claim classroom supplies you buy, work-related self-education, home-office running costs for marking and planning, and union fees.

Hospitality workers

As a hospitality worker you can generally claim compulsory logo’d uniforms and their laundry, safety footwear, and required certificates like your RSA.

IT professionals

As an IT professional you can generally claim home-office running costs, work hardware and software, self-education, and professional memberships.

Office & admin workers

As an office or admin worker you can generally claim working-from-home running costs, the work portion of your phone, self-education, and professional or union fees.

Retail & sales workers

As a retail or sales worker you can generally claim compulsory logo’d uniforms and their laundry, work-related training, and union or association fees.

Aged & disability care workers

As an aged-care or disability support worker you can generally claim uniforms and laundry, first-aid training, travel between clients, and required checks.

Security guards

As a security guard you can generally claim your licence renewal, compulsory uniforms and laundry, required equipment, and first-aid training.

Flight attendants & cabin crew

Cabin crew returns turn on two things most occupations never meet: an allowance that may not cover what a layover actually costs, and grooming rules that feel compulsory but are mostly not deductible.

Engineers

Engineering claims sit in two piles that behave very differently: the credentials that keep you registered, deductible year after year, and the degree that got you there, which never is.

Pharmacists

A pharmacist deduction list is unusually predictable: the same registration, indemnity and CPD costs recur every year, which makes them easy to claim and easy to forget.

Bus & coach drivers

Bus and coach work splits sharply at the depot gate: a regular route rarely produces travel or meal claims, while overnight charter work can produce quite a few.

Childcare & early educators

As a childcare worker or early educator you can generally claim first-aid training, required checks, resources you buy for the room, and work-related self-education.

Did you know?

Australia's GST has been frozen at 10% for over 25 years, partly because changing the rate legally requires the unanimous agreement of every state and territory plus both houses of federal Parliament.

Treasury states plainly that 'legislation requires that changes to the GST base or rate require unanimous agreement by all State and Territory governments, as well as both houses of the Australian Parliament' — a political straitjacket flowing from the 1999 Intergovernmental Agreement that has kept the rate untouched since 1 July 2000.

Saudis lost a perk and gained a tax in the same breath: the same May 2020 package that tripled VAT also suspended the 1,000-riyal monthly cost-of-living allowance paid to state workers.

VAT rose from 1 July 2020 while the allowance was suspended from 1 June 2020, together part of roughly 100 billion riyals of austerity measures affecting about 1.5 million state employees.

Employees — common questions

Is there a tax app built for employees, not just sole traders?

Yes. 2Fin is built for employees as much as for sole traders. As an employee you get work expenses flagged from your own transactions, receipts kept with them, an export labelled for your tax authority, working from home with your country’s rules in view, a car logbook and — in Australia, the UK, the US, Canada and India — an estimate of your refund. If you also run a business, each transaction is tagged to your job, your business or your private life.

Does 2Fin work out my tax refund during the year?

Yes, as an estimate, in Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and India — and in the United States for one kind of income at a time. Fin projects your pay to the end of the year and subtracts the tax your employer withheld; in Australia and Canada it subtracts your work-related deductions too, and in Australia it adds the Medicare levy, the low income tax offset and HELP. India applies its standard deduction in place of work expenses, and the UK estimate does not deduct employment expenses yet. Sole-trader and rental income are added in where that country’s estimate takes them. Interest, dividends and instalments you have already paid are not included yet, so treat it as a guide and check the final figure in your return or with your agent. Everywhere else you see income to date and an effective rate. 2Fin helps you find and organise potential deductions; always confirm what applies to you with your accountant or tax authority.

My pay goes to a bank I have not connected. Can it still estimate my tax?

Yes. Add an employer by hand and copy the gross pay and the tax withheld from your latest payslip, either for one pay or year to date. Fin warns you if it looks like a duplicate of pay it already sees, and the estimate and your Upcoming list use it from then on. Payslips are typed in rather than uploaded: Fin does not read payslip files yet.

Does 2Fin lodge my tax return for me?

No. 2Fin is not a registered tax agent anywhere and never sends anything to a tax authority. It keeps your records sorted through the year and exports them — a Tax Deduction CSV labelled for your authority (the ATO myDeductions layout in Australia, with a suggested return line on each work expense), an accountant ledger and an accountant pack — for you to use in your return or hand to your agent.

I work from home two days a week. Which method should I use?

In Australia, whichever gives the larger claim that you can back up: the fixed rate is the simpler one if you keep a record of every hour you work from home; actual costs can win when you are home most days in a room set aside for work. Fin shows both side by side once you enter your hours and running costs, and the full comparison is in the working-from-home guide in Learn. In the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, New Zealand and India, Fin asks the questions that decide whether and how you can claim and shows the official guidance; flat rates such as HMRC’s simplified expenses or the IRS simplified method are stated for you to apply, not applied for you. 2Fin helps you find and organise potential deductions; always confirm what applies to you with your accountant or tax authority.

Does this work outside Australia?

Yes. Work expenses, receipts, employers added by hand, Upcoming and the accountant exports work in all 88 countries you can choose, and the Tax Deduction CSV is labelled for HMRC, the IRS, the CRA, India’s Income Tax Department, Inland Revenue NZ and IRAS. The refund estimate runs in Australia, the UK, Canada and India, and in the US for one kind of income at a time; elsewhere you see income to date and an effective rate. The D1–D15 lines, the working-from-home fixed rate and cents per kilometre are Australian only.

What does 2Fin cost for an employee?

The free plan covers your transactions, categories, bills, budgets, Upcoming and recurring patterns, statement uploads and a bank feed you connect yourself. Premium (US$23/month) adds receipts, automatic categories, tax analysis and the tax exports. ELITE+ (US$42/month) adds the live tax estimate page and activity statements. See the plans below.
