Tax deductions for engineers
Engineering claims sit in two piles that behave very differently: the credentials that keep you registered, deductible year after year, and the degree that got you there, which never is.
Most engineering roles carry an ongoing cost of simply staying qualified — registration, chartered status, CPD hours, the standards you have to buy. Those recur, and they are where the reliable claims live. Site work adds a second layer, because moving between sites is treated very differently from travelling to one.
The three rules for any claim
- You paid for it yourself and weren’t reimbursed.
- It directly relates to earning your income.
- You have a record — a receipt, invoice or bank statement.

What you can usually claim
Registration and chartered status
Renewing your professional registration and maintaining chartered status, along with membership of the professional body your role expects.
CPD, standards and technical references
Continuing professional development, conferences, and the standards or codes you buy to do the work.
Technical software and licences
CAD, analysis and modelling licences you pay for yourself, apportioned for any private use.
Site PPE, tools and instruments
Protective clothing, boots and helmets for site work, plus instruments and tools you buy. Higher-cost items are claimed over their effective life.
Travel between work sites
Travel from one site or office to another during the day, including where you carry bulky equipment that cannot be left securely on site.
General information, not personal tax advice. What you can claim depends on your circumstances — check the ATO's own occupation guides or a registered tax agent, and keep records for every claim.
Keep in mind
- The degree that qualified you to become an engineer in the first place.
- The ordinary commute from home to a single regular workplace.
- Plain clothing worn on site without a logo or protective function.
- Private use of software or a phone — apportion rather than claiming the lot.
Where mistakes happen
The claims most likely to get adjusted — not because they're disallowed outright, but because the split or the timing was off.
- Claiming HECS-HELP repayments or your original engineering degree as self-education — unlike CPD that builds on the role you already hold, both stay outside the deduction rules.
- Claiming a CAD or modelling licence at 100% when it's also used for freelance or side work billed separately.

Engineers — common questions
Can I claim my engineering degree?
Study that got you into the profession is not deductible, because it came before the income it relates to. Study that builds on the role you already hold generally is. This is general information, not personal tax advice — what you can claim depends on your circumstances, so check with the ATO or a registered tax agent, and keep records to back up every claim.
Is my chartered membership deductible?
Maintaining registration and professional membership your role requires or expects is generally claimable each year, unlike the one-off cost of first qualifying. This is general information, not personal tax advice — what you can claim depends on your circumstances, so check with the ATO or a registered tax agent, and keep records to back up every claim.
Can I claim driving between sites?
Travel between workplaces during the day is generally deductible. The trip from home to your first regular site is not, though carrying bulky equipment with nowhere secure to store it can change that. This is general information, not personal tax advice — what you can claim depends on your circumstances, so check with the ATO or a registered tax agent, and keep records to back up every claim.
What about software I use for work and side projects?
Claim the work-related share. Keep a note of how you arrived at the split — a reasonable, documented apportionment is what makes the claim stand up. This is general information, not personal tax advice — what you can claim depends on your circumstances, so check with the ATO or a registered tax agent, and keep records to back up every claim.
