Most people should start in the cloud — it takes a minute, works from any device, and every feature is available.
If you would rather your financial records never sat on somebody else’s server, the desktop app keeps them in a folder on your machine — and you can check that claim yourself.
Start in the cloud — it is ready now
Access from anywhere, on any device, with every feature available. Nothing to install and nothing to maintain. Most people want this one.
Rather your records did not sit on someone else’s server?
Then run 2Fin on your own machine. The database, your receipts and every attachment live in one folder you choose — you can open it, copy it, back it up and move it without asking anyone. The free tier needs no account at all, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to verify.
You do not have to take that on trust. The app shows you the real folder path and opens it in your file manager, and it keeps a record of every outbound request, so you can see exactly what left and where it went.
The installers are not out yet.
The app is built and running, and the signed installers are the last piece. Leave your email and you will get one link, once, when they are ready — nothing else.

What happens when you install it
It shows you the folder
First thing, before anything else: the actual path your data will live in, and a button that opens it. The strongest evidence for "your data stays here" is you looking at your own files.
It asks for nothing
No account, no email, no verification on the free plan. Bring in a CSV and you are working.
It tells you what left
An outbound record lists every request the app has made, where it went and why. Counts and destinations, never contents.
It keeps working if you stop paying
Back to the free plan, data readable, export working. That is in the licence, not just on this page.
Would rather run a server?
For a firm whose policy says client data cannot sit in someone else’s SaaS, 2Fin runs on your own infrastructure. Two containers and a volume, or one stack in your own AWS account with an encrypted volume that survives instance termination.
Docker Compose
docker compose --env-file .env up -dYour own AWS
aws cloudformation deploy --stack-name fin …Questions people ask
Do I need an account to use the desktop app?
Not on the free plan. You install it and start — there is nothing to create, nothing to verify, and no password to forget. An account is only needed for paid features, because a subscription has to belong to somebody, and you link that through your browser so card details never touch the app.
Where does my data actually go?
Into a folder on your machine that you can open, copy and back up. The database is ordinary SQLite and you can read it with any SQLite tool. Sensitive fields are encrypted with a key held in your operating system keychain, which Fin never has a copy of.
Does it work offline?
Everything on the free plan works offline permanently. Paid features keep working offline for as long as the subscription is actually paid, because the entitlement carries its own expiry rather than checking in each time.
How do I know nothing is being sent?
The app lists every outbound request it has made, where it went and why — counts and destinations, never contents. Each connection has its own switch, and a Sovereign setting stops all of them. Run a packet capture if you like; that is the intended reaction.
What happens if I stop paying?
The app returns to the free plan and keeps running. Your data stays readable and export keeps working. Withholding someone their own financial records is not a mechanism we will use in any circumstance, and that is written into the licence rather than merely promised.
Can I run it on my own server instead?
Yes. Docker Compose runs it anywhere Docker runs, and one CloudFormation stack brings it up in your own AWS account with an encrypted volume and access limited to a CIDR you nominate. That path suits a firm with a policy; for one person, the desktop app is simpler.
