Checked against Vero, to the cent
Vero publishes what a tax card withholds at eight salary levels each year, for a Helsinki resident in the Evangelical Lutheran church. This calculator reproduces every one of them for 2025 and 2026 exactly — the euros and the percentage — and the same arithmetic answers assistants through the free Tax MCP.
State income tax scale (2026)
State tax runs on your taxable earned income — your wages less the automatic €750 cost deduction, your pension, unemployment and daily-allowance contributions, and the basic deduction (up to €4,265). Municipal tax, church tax and the 1.1% medical-care contribution are charged on the same amount.
| Taxable earned income | State rate |
|---|---|
| €0 – €22,000 | 12.64% |
| €22,000 – €32,600 | 19% |
| €32,600 – €40,100 | 30.25% |
| €40,100 – €52,100 | 33.25% |
| Over €52,100 | 37.5% |
Also withheld in 2026: YLE tax at 2.5% of net income over €15,150 (at most €160), the 0.88% daily-allowance contribution once wages reach €17,255, TyEL at 7.3% and unemployment insurance at 0.89%. Company tax and VAT
A Finnish company (osakeyhtiö) pays 20% corporate income tax on its profit. The government has proposed cutting it to 18% from 2027 (HE 151/2026); until Parliament passes that, 20% applies. VAT (ALV) is 25.5%, with 13.5% on food, restaurant meals, transport, accommodation, medicines, books and culture and sport, and 10% on newspapers and magazines. Businesses with turnover under €20,000 a year need not register. The VAT calculator adds or removes ALV on any amount.
Finnish tax — common questions
How much tax do I pay on €50,000 in Finland?
In Helsinki in 2026, not in a church: about €13,010 in tax and contributions altogether, leaving about €36,990 take-home (€3,083 a month). Your tax card would say 18%; the 7.3% TyEL pension and 0.89% unemployment contributions come off your pay on top of it. At the national average municipal rate the total is about €14,038.
What is a veroprosentti, and why is it lower than what I actually pay?
The veroprosentti on your tax card is the share of your pay withheld for income tax: state, municipal and church tax, the health-insurance contributions and YLE tax, after the earned-income credit. Vero rounds it up to the next half point. Your employer also deducts the employee pension contribution (TyEL, 7.3% in 2026) and unemployment insurance (0.89%) separately, so the total taken from your pay is higher than the tax-card percentage.
Does my municipality change my tax?
Yes — municipal tax is often the largest single tax on a modest salary, and each municipality sets its own rate. In 2026 mainland rates run from 4.7% in Kauniainen to 10.9% in Pomarkku; the published average is 7.6%. Your municipality is the one you lived in on 31 December of the previous year.
What is työtulovähennys (the earned income credit)?
A credit worth 18% of your wages, up to €3,430 in 2026 (€4,630 if you turned 65 before the year began), reduced by 2% of net earned income between €35,000 and €50,550. It comes off state tax first, and any excess off municipal tax, church tax and the medical-care contribution in proportion. It never reduces YLE tax.
How are capital gains taxed in Finland?
As capital income: 30% up to €30,000 of capital income a year and 34% above. You deduct either what the asset really cost (plus buying and selling costs) or the deemed acquisition cost — 20% of the sale price, or 40% if you owned it 10 years or more — whichever is larger. Selling shares for €12,000 that you bought for €4,000 over ten years ago comes to about €2,160 of tax. If your sale prices for the year total €1,000 or less, the gains are tax-free.
Does this work for Åland?
No. Åland residents pay state tax on a lower scale, take a different basic deduction and pay a media fee instead of YLE tax, so this calculator covers mainland Finland only.
