2Fin vs Sure

AI2Fin vs Sure

Sure is what Maybe Finance became: an open-source app you host yourself to watch your net worth, budgets and investments across banks and exchanges. 2Fin also runs on your own machine — a desktop app with no account, or a Docker stack you operate — but it is pointed at a different question: what each transaction means at tax time, and what you can claim.

Where AI2Fin takes a different approach

Built differently where it counts — here is how.

Local-first without a server to run

Sure keeps your data private by asking you to host it: Docker, Postgres, Redis, updates, backups. 2Fin desktop keeps the same data in a SQLite file in a folder you own, with no account on the free plan — and offers Docker Compose and an AWS CloudFormation stack if you want it inside your own perimeter. An outbound record in the app lists every request that left, so the claim is checked rather than trusted.

Built for tax, not for net worth

Sure tells you what you are worth. 2Fin tells you what each transaction means: GST or VAT worked out per line with the reasoning shown, BAS and EOFY treatment, deductions surfaced through the year, receipts read from a photo and matched. 2Fin helps you find and organise potential deductions; always confirm eligibility with your accountant or tax authority.

Bank feeds where you hold the key

Both take bring-your-own credentials — SimpleFIN, Akahu, Up and more. The difference is honesty about where a token may live: 2Fin runs personal-use bank tokens on the desktop app only, because that is what the banks’ terms allow, and says so on each connector page.

Ask Claude or ChatGPT directly

Sure lets you point its assistant at an LLM endpoint you configure. 2Fin ships a Model Context Protocol server — hosted with OAuth, or local on the desktop app so nothing routes through 2Fin’s servers — with read-only tools for transactions, bills and tax treatment.

Which one fits you?

Both are good tools — the right pick depends on what your business needs most.

Sure suits you when…

  • You want a net-worth dashboard across banks, brokerages and crypto, and you enjoy running it yourself.
  • Open source is a requirement, not a preference.
  • You track investments and exchange balances live rather than importing trades for tax.
  • You already run a home server and want one more container, not one more app.

2Fin suits you when…

  • You are a sole trader, freelancer or small firm and tax time is the point — GST, BAS, deductions, receipts.
  • You want your records on your own disk without administering Postgres and Redis.
  • You want bank feeds where you hold the key — SimpleFIN, BankSync, Akahu or Up — or statement files that need no provider at all.
  • You want to ask Claude or ChatGPT about your own spending through a read-only MCP connection.

AI2Fin vs Sure — common questions

Is 2Fin self-hosted like Sure?

Yes, in two shapes. The desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux keeps your database, receipts and attachments in a folder you choose, with sensitive fields sealed by your OS keychain and no account on the free plan. If you would rather run a server, Docker Compose runs the whole product anywhere Docker runs, and a single AWS CloudFormation stack brings up one instance with an encrypted volume in your own account. Sure is something you host yourself; 2Fin also offers a hosted option at app.ai2fin.com if you would rather not run anything.

Is 2Fin open source?

No. Sure is AGPL and you can read every line. 2Fin is licensed software with a free tier. What it offers instead is verifiability: the desktop database is plain SQLite you can open with any tool, an outbound record lists every request that left your machine and why, and a Sovereign setting stops all of them. If reading the code is the requirement, Sure is the honest answer.

Which bank connections do they share?

Both use bring-your-own credentials, and several providers overlap: SimpleFIN, Akahu (NZ) and Up (AU). Sure adds Plaid, Redbark, Enable Banking for the EU, Wise, Trade Republic and Trading 212 among others; 2Fin adds BankSync for ten countries, Starling and Monzo for the UK, and statement-file import (OFX, QIF, CAMT.053, MT940) that needs no provider at all.

Does 2Fin track crypto like Sure?

Not live. Sure connects to Kraken, Binance, Coinbase and on-chain wallets to show balances. 2Fin imports exchange trade history from CSV so each disposal can be given a capital-gains treatment — the tax consequence rather than the running balance. If you want both, Sure for the portfolio and 2Fin for the return is a reasonable pairing.

Can I move from Sure or Maybe to 2Fin?

Yes. Export transactions to CSV and import them — columns are mapped for you and multi-currency is handled. Bank feeds that overlap (SimpleFIN, Akahu, Up) reconnect with the same provider account.
