camt.054 (debit and credit notification)

The ISO 20022 notice that details a debit or credit — often the payments inside a batch.

camt.054 is the ISO 20022 bank-to-customer debit and credit notification: a message reporting individual debits or credits to an account, during the day or after the booking day closes. Banks commonly use it to break one batch booking on a statement into the payments behind it, and to report returned, rejected or refunded payments.

It usually arrives alongside a camt.053 rather than instead of one. The statement shows a single line for a batch of supplier payments or card settlements; the camt.054 for the same booking lists each payment in it with its own counterparty and reference.

Worked example

A company pays 40 suppliers in one batch. Its camt.053 shows a single debit for the batch total; the camt.054 for the same booking lists the 40 payments, each with its creditor and end-to-end reference, which is what lets each supplier invoice be marked as paid.

Common mistake

Adding the camt.054 notifications and the camt.053 statement for the same days together. The notification details entries the statement already books, so counting both brings the same payments in twice.

Questions about this term

camt.054 (debit and credit notification): common questions

When does a bank send a camt.054?
When it reports a debit or credit at a finer grain than the statement: typically after a batch booking, to list the individual payments inside it, or when a payment is returned or rejected. Some banks send it during the day and some after the booking day closes.
Is camt.054 the same as a payment status report?
No. A payment status report (pain.002) tells the sender whether a payment instruction was accepted or rejected before anything is booked. camt.054 reports what was actually debited or credited to the account, after the bank has booked it.
Should I import camt.053 or camt.054 into 2Fin?
The camt.053 statement. 2Fin reads camt.053 end-of-day statements, which carry every booked entry with the balances around it, while a camt.054 notification details entries that statement already books — so the statement is the complete record to bring in.
