camt.053 (ISO 20022 bank statement)

The end-of-day bank statement in ISO 20022 XML.

camt.053 is the ISO 20022 bank-to-customer statement: an XML file a bank sends after each booking day with the opening and closing balances and every booked entry on the account. Each entry carries its amount, a credit or debit indicator, booking and value dates, a bank transaction code and the references a business needs to reconcile it.

It is the structured successor to the SWIFT MT940 statement. Where an MT940 squeezes the payer, the purpose and the reference into one free-text line, camt.053 gives each its own field, and it can carry the end-to-end ID the payer set when the payment started. Its siblings are camt.052, the intraday report, and camt.054, the debit and credit notification.

Worked example

One entry: Amt 1240.00 in EUR, CdtDbtInd CRDT, booking date 2026-07-05, and the remittance line INV-1042. 2Fin turns it into a transaction of +1,240.00 EUR on 5 July 2026, described with INV-1042 and the payer’s name, under the IBAN its statement block names.

Common mistake

Reading the amount on its own. camt.053 amounts are always positive and the direction sits beside them in CdtDbtInd (CRDT or DBIT), so a parser that ignores it books every payment out as income — a wrong ledger with no error anywhere.

Questions about this term

camt.053 (ISO 20022 bank statement): common questions

What is the difference between camt.052, camt.053 and camt.054?
camt.053 is the end-of-day statement of every booked entry, with opening and closing balances. camt.052 is the account report a bank sends during the day, and camt.054 is a debit or credit notification, often used to give the detail behind one batch booking or a single incoming payment.
Which version of camt.053 do banks send?
It depends on the bank: versions such as camt.053.001.02 and camt.053.001.08 are both common, and each bank publishes an implementation guide for the fields it fills in. 2Fin recognises a camt.053 file by its namespace or its BkToCstmrStmt root element, whichever version it is.
Can one camt.053 file hold more than one account?
Yes. A file can contain several Stmt blocks, one per account, each with its own IBAN or account ID. 2Fin keeps every entry with the account its own statement block names, so two accounts delivered in one file stay two accounts in the ledger.
