AI2Fin vs Dext — capture for the practice, or expense intelligence for you?
Dext is the established receipt and invoice capture tool for accounting practices — clients photograph or forward documents, Dext extracts the header data, and the practice publishes them to Xero, QuickBooks or Sage. AI2Fin starts from the other side: it is the business owner’s finance brain, reading the bank feed you connect, capturing receipts by email, photo or Telegram in over a hundred languages, watching budgets and bills, keeping GST separated and surfacing deductions — and then handing the accountant coded transactions.
Where AI2Fin takes a different approach
Not better in every way for every user — but meaningfully different where it counts.
Your transactions are the starting point
Dext starts from a document. Fin starts from your transactions — a bank feed you connect with your own key (BankSync, SimpleFIN, Akahu, Up Bank, Monzo, Starling), a CSV or XLSX upload, a Google Sheet, or a watched folder on the desktop edition — so every card payment is categorised and tax-tagged whether or not a receipt ever turns up.
Rules that learn instead of rules you build
Dext’s supplier rules are set up by hand, client by client. Fin learns from how you categorise and applies it to the next transaction — and on the Xero and QuickBooks connectors (beta) it reads twelve months of your file’s coding to propose the rules for you.
Receipts in 100+ languages, merchant kept as printed
Forward a receipt by email, snap a photo or send it on Telegram. Fin reads it in over a hundred languages and keeps the merchant in the original script with a translation beside it.
Budgets, bills, travel and vehicle — the owner’s view
Capture is one part of running a business. AI2Fin also watches budgets, spots recurring bills, tracks travel and vehicle deductions and shows the tax picture as the year goes — the parts a practice tool is not built to show you.
ChatGPT, Claude, Sheets, Notion and webhooks
Query your finances through the AI2Fin MCP integration, or send finished rows to Google Sheets, Excel, Notion or Airtable, or to your own systems through webhooks and the Integration API.
Free forever, no credits to count
AI2Fin has a genuine free plan with no card and no trial timer, and receipts are not metered by a credit balance.

Which one fits you?
Both are good tools — the right pick depends on what your business needs most.
Dext suits you when…
- You run a practice with many clients and want one capture inbox per client, priced per client, publishing straight into each ledger with the source image attached.
- Your workflow is built around Dext already — supplier rules, approval flows and the practice dashboard — and your team knows it.
- You need supplier-statement fetching and invoice collection from suppliers’ portals on behalf of clients.
- You need Sage as a direct publishing target today.
AI2Fin suits you when…
- You are the owner and want the whole picture — bank feed, receipts, budgets, bills, deductions — not a capture inbox that ends at the ledger.
- You would rather Fin learn your categories from how you work, and from your ledger’s own coding history, than build and maintain supplier rules by hand.
- You capture receipts on the move and in more than one language, and want the merchant kept as it is printed.
- You want a free start, your numbers queryable in ChatGPT or Claude, and coded transactions pushed to Xero or QuickBooks Online with the receipt attached while that connector is in beta.

ENTERPRISE
Enterprise-grade data control is the default here — on every plan.
Your records can stay on your own machine or in your own cloud, telemetry stays off unless you turn it on, and Fin keeps an auditable record of everything it sends. Enterprise adds the people and the paperwork: dedicated support, custom deployment and reviews for large-scale operations.
Verify it yourselfAI2Fin vs Dext — common questions
Is AI2Fin a Dext alternative for small business owners?
For an owner, yes — with the caveat that they are different shapes of product. Dext is a capture tool your accountant runs; AI2Fin is an expense tracker you run, with your own bank feed, receipt capture, budgets and tax intelligence built in. If what you want is your own finances organised and your accountant handed coded transactions, AI2Fin is the direct fit. If your accountant has standardised the practice on Dext, they may still want you to use it for capture.
Does AI2Fin use a credit system for receipts like Dext?
No. Receipt reading is part of the plan you are on rather than a balance of credits to top up. Dext meters line-item extraction through credits, which suits a practice budgeting per client; AI2Fin is priced for one owner and keeps the free plan free.
Do I have to build supplier rules in AI2Fin the way Dext requires?
No. Fin learns from the way you categorise — correct a transaction once and the next one from that merchant follows — and it applies your tax treatment per country. On the Xero and QuickBooks connectors, in beta, it also reads the last twelve months of your file’s coding and proposes the rules for you. You can still add explicit rules if you like predictability, but nothing has to be set up before Fin starts sorting.
Can my accountant still work in Xero if I use AI2Fin instead of Dext?
Yes. AI2Fin’s direct Xero connector, in beta, reads your chart of accounts and coding history and pushes each transaction you choose as a coded Spend or Receive Money with the receipt attached, so your accountant sees it in Xero like anything else. QuickBooks Online works the same way; MYOB takes a CSV export. Everything is also available as rows in Google Sheets, Excel, Notion or Airtable.
What does Dext do that AI2Fin does not?
Practice-side work: a capture inbox per client, publishing to Sage as well as Xero and QuickBooks, supplier-statement fetching, and approval workflows across a firm’s client list. AI2Fin is built for the person running one business, and its accounting connectors are in beta rather than a decade-old core feature.
